Alternative Printer Setup for Mac OS X
Obtain the Driver if Necessary
Here is a list of Library printer queues and their drivers. The newest drivers can be downloaded from www.hp.com.
* duplex_east: L-153 Duplex Printers: HP LaserJet 4100 Series PCL6
* north_ref: the North Reference Room Duplex Printers: HP LaserJet 4250 Series PCL6
* lib_color: the South Reference Color Printer: HP Color LaserJet 4600 PS
OS 10.3
- Click the Go menu on your desktop top menu toolbar.
- Click Utilities.
- Open Directory Access. Double-click SMB (you may have to click the lock in the lower left-corner). Enter the WINS Server address: "134.10.2.30". Close Directory Access.
- Open Printer Setup Utility (in the Utilities folder).
- Click Add.
- From the top drop-down, choose Windows Printing.
- In the second drop-down, choose Network Neighborhood, then in the bottom list select Servers.
- Choose Library_print. You will be prompted for your username and password. After typing them in, check "Remember this password in my keychain. Click OK.
- Click once on the printer you want and select the correct driver in the Printer Model box.

- Click the Go menu at the top of your desktop.
- Click Utilities.
- Open Directory Access. Double-click SMB (you may have to click the lock in the lower left-corner). Enter the WINS Server address: "134.10.2.30". Close Directory Access.
- Open Printer Setup Utility (in the Utilities folder).
- Click Add.
- Hold down the Alt/Option key and click the More Printers button.
- From the top drop-down, select "Advanced" and then "Windows printer via SAMBA".
- Enter a name for the printer in the Device name field such as "My Favorite Library Printer".
- Fill out the Device URI with your username and password and the printer queue you'd like to use. E.g:
smb://yourusername:password@reed.edu/library_print/duplex_east - Choose the correct HP model driver.
OS 10.5
- Go to System Preferences -> Network. Click on the Advanced button. Click WINS. Click the + to add an address to "WIN Servers". Enter address "134.10.2.30". Click OK. Click Apply. Click Show All.
- In System Preferences, open Print & Fax. Click the + to add a printer.
- The first time you do this, add the Advanced button to the add printer toolbar: Ctrl-click on the toolbar, select "Customize Toolbar...", and then drag the Advanced button onto the toolbar.
- Select Advanced then specify the following settings:
Type: Windows
Device: Another Device
URL: fill out with your username and password and the printer queue you'd like to use. E.g:
smb://yourusername:password@reed.edu/library_print/duplex_east
Name: the printer name
Location (optional): the physical location of the printer, e.g. "Library South "
Print Using: Select a driver to use -> search for the correct HP model. - Click Add. Check "Duplex Unit". Click Continue.
